Gala History

Posted on: Dec 20, 2011

For many, a modern day gala conjures images of elaborately decorated ballrooms, dance floors and fine dining. However, in its 15th century origin a “gala” more commonly referred to the ornate clothing or royal robes worn in honor of special celebrations. It wasn’t until the 17th century that the term evolved to describe the festivity and merriment of the occasion itself.

Today we borrow from the formality and festivity of the Italian use of “gala”in honor of significant occastions like non-profit fundraisers, political and military balls, red carpet events, and other celebrations.  [one_half_last]
